The Town of Victoria Park’s stunning riverfront parkland has entered a new stage of revitalisation, with work commencing on the much-anticipated McCallum Park Active Area.
Located next to the new Swan River Pedestrian and Cyclist Bridges, which will soon connect Victoria Park with the City, the $4.8 million Active Zone will complete the second stage of the McCallum Park Master Plan, turning it into a premier sporting precinct for skate, BMX and basketball.
Made possible with $2.5m funding support from the Australian Government’s Investing in Our Communities program, and $926,000 from the WA Government’s Community Sporting and Recreation Facilities Fund, Mayor Karen Vernon said the Active Area would be an exciting boost to the Town’s sporting facilities and a great regional destination for young people and families.
“Our Town is already home to great sporting and recreational amenities like our leisure centres, Optus Stadium, AFL, AFLW and WAFL facilities at Lathlain Park and community sports such as hockey, cricket, soccer, football, tennis and basketball at local parks,” Mayor Vernon said.
“The addition of competition-ready skate and scooter facilities, all-ages BMX pump tracks, revamped outdoor basketball courts and community gathering spaces will see McCallum Park rejoin the list of premier inner-city recreation destinations.
“The Active Area will be fully accessible by pedestrian and cycle paths from South Perth to Burswood and beyond, and by public transport and the new city-link bridge, further encouraging active modes of transport around our beautiful Swan River foreshore.
“We are very grateful to the Federal Member for Swan, Ms Zaneta Mascarenhas MP for championing funding for this project during the 2022 Federal election, and the State Government for supporting our Council to deliver this valuable community infrastructure.”
Member for Swan Zaneta Mascarenhas said:
“It’s incredibly exciting to see the McCallum Park Active Area coming to life, and I’m proud of the hard work from all levels of government that’s made it possible.
“This project shows what we can achieve when we work together. To see it coming to fruition after I committed to it in 2022, followed by securing $2.5 million in Federal Government funding, is rewarding – but the biggest win is for our community.
“The Active Area is set to be a real game-changer. It will connect our neighbourhoods, boost the local sports scene and provide a space where young people and families can get active, connect and make memories.
“I can’t wait to be there myself, enjoying everything McCallum Park Active Area has to offer alongside other local families!”
Member for Victoria Park Hannah Beazley said:
“It is so exciting to see work starting on this project, which will provide world class recreational facilities for locals and visitors.
“As a local and the local Member, I know how much these facilities will be utilised and I am so pleased that our Cook Labor Government invested almost $1 million to make it a reality.
“I am particularly excited about the revamped basketball courts, which I know will be in hot demand. It is so fantastic to see our Cook Labor Government investing in local facilities, which improve health, wellbeing and mental health for everyone.”
Skate facilities will include a bowl and skateable plaza, which will sit alongside the BMX pump track, with a Town-funded junior scooter track to also be included. The revitalised basketball courts will feature large-scale artworks by local artists.
The McCallum Park Active Area project is slated for completion by mid-2025. For more information on the project, visit vicpark.info/MPAA
