E-Waste
The Federal Government have issued a statewide ban on electronic waste in Landfill. This means as of July 2024, e-waste will no longer be collected as bulk waste in the Town's verge collections.
What is e-waste?
General e-waste
Waste items with electronic components are referred to as ‘e-waste’. This can include anything from computers, mobile phones and certain toys to printers, calculators, and vapes. Recycling e-waste instead of letting it go to landfill prevents hazardous substances such as mercury and lead from contaminating the environment, while also allowing valuable resources like gold, copper and platinum to be recovered.
Some of the items that commonly come under the 'e-waste' heading are:
- Computers, hard drives, keyboards, modems and mice
- TV screens, monitors, tablets and game consoles
- Fax machines, scanners and printers
- Phones and digital cameras, including webcams
- USB thumb drives and vapes
- Batteries and wiring
- Floppy disks, CDs and DVDs
Items such as these are no longer collected as bulk waste and must be disposed of properly as outline on this webpage.
'White goods' or home appliances
White goods form a special category of e-waste which is often processed differently due to size, components and design factors. This category includes major household electronic appliances such as fridges, washing machines, clothes dryers, air conditioners, water heaters, ovens and stoves. These can still be collected as bulk waste in the Town.
