What is a Bike Bus?

A Bike Bus is a group of parents and kids who cycle to school together. Much like a traditional bus, a bike bus follows a fixed route and collects “passengers” along the way.

The Town supports and advocates for bike buses to be formed in our community. They encourage active transport, reduce cars on the road (especially important during school drop-off), and they help kids to be more active, build confidence, and feel safer riding in a group. Studies even suggest that kids who exercise and socialise before school are more focused and ready to learn.

Bike buses contribute to delivering a number of key outcomes across the Integrated Transport Sub-Programs.

Lathlain Bike Bus

In 2023, a local dad started the Lathlain Primary School Bike Bus – the first bike bus in Western Australia. Together with the Department of Transport and the Road Safety Commission, the Town has committed to support more parents, schools and students to join the movement and start their own bike bus. Bike Bus 101

Together with the Department of Transport and the Road Safety Commission, the Town has committed to support more parents, schools and students to join the movement and start their own bike bus.

In October 2024, the Town hosted a community information session on Bike Buses. “Bike Bus 101” brought schools and parents together to share experiences, best practices, and ideas to increase participation of local bike buses. The event was highlighted by a presentation from Massimo, a local dad who established the Lathlain Bike Bus. Massimo shared his story and gave an overview of his Bik Bus Toolkit step-by-step guide to starting a Bike Bus.
