Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ): 30-Minute Free Parking Offer from the Town
1. When were the changes to the free parking period made, and why?
The changes were introduced on 17 July 2024. Motorists now receive a free 30-minute parking period, per car, per day. This initiative was implemented to increase parking turnover and improve access for people visiting the area. Beyond the free 30 minutes, motorists can use paid parking within the designated time limits for the area.
2. What are the specific rules regarding the 30-minute free parking?
Each motorist is entitled to one free 30-minute parking session per vehicle, per day. After the free period ends, any additional parking will require payment, and time limits for the area must be followed. If you leave the zone and wish to park again in that same zone, a minimum of two hours must first pass before you can park in the same area, as required by the Town's Vehicle Management Local Law.
3. When was the community consultation held for these changes?
The Town's Parking Management Plan, which guides changes to parking regulations and fees, went to public consultation in 2021. The current changes were made public on 02 July 2024 through the Town's Agenda Briefing documents and were endorsed at the Council meeting two weeks later. The Parking Management Plan is designed to regulate parking demand and occupancy, offering customers flexibility to park during peak times or enjoy reduced rates during off-peak hours.
4. What if residents/visitors need to make multiple trips during the day?
For residents or visitors making multiple trips, it's important to note that there is no daily cap on paid parking. However, under the Town's Vehicle Management Local Law, vehicles must leave the area or zone for at least two hours before parking in that same zone again. This ensures that parking bays are available for other motorists and prevents one vehicle from occupying the space all day.
5. Can I return to the same parking area later in the day?
Yes, you can return, but only after a two-hour period has passed since your vehicle left the zone. This rule helps ensure parking availability for others and promotes fair use of parking spaces in busy areas.
