The Town of Victoria Park is calling on the community to get on their trusty bikes and roll out to launch Carlisle’s newest bike lanes, with a community ride and street celebration to take place Saturday 24 August.
Cyclists and other active transport users now have a new dedicated route connecting them to Carlisle’s revitalised Town Centre, with the latest stage of the Archer Street protected bike lanes between Orrong Rd and Star St open to the public.
Mayor Karen Vernon said the lanes would encourage more people to choose bike riding as a mode of active transport and enhance the journey of experienced cyclists because they provide a safe connection to the vibrant collection of local businesses on Archer Street and are an integral part of delivering on the pedestrian-centric goals of the Archer Mint Streetscape Improvement Plan.
“With even more improvements planned for our Carlisle Town Centre, and a future stage of the protected bike lanes to connect riders to METRONET’s new Carlisle train station and shared public space, the future of Archer Street is bright,” Mayor Vernon said.
“We are excited to celebrate this vital infrastructure with the community, whose early input to the Streetscape Improvement Plan called for a pedestrian and cyclist-focused environment in the heart of Carlisle.
Jointly funded by the Town and State Government through the Western Australian Bicycle Network Grants Program, the protected bike lanes are a crucial part of the Town’s overarching Archer/Mint Streetscape Improvement Plan, which is revitalising the popular Carlisle Town Centre and streetscape to include pedestrian-centric design, expanded tree canopy and traffic-calming measures.
The On Ya Bike community celebration takes place 9am-12.30pm Saturday 24 August and will feature a community slow ride from Rayment Park, Lathlain to the Carlisle Town Centre along Archer St, followed by kids activities, entertainment, a bike maintenance stall and skills course and more at Archer St Car Park.
